Subway Sweet Onion Sauce Copycat Recipe

I love Subway's sweet onion sauce and have been looking for a good copy cat recipe for it for quite some time. There is some version floating around online that just doesn't quite cut it but the same recipe seems to copied over and over again on all kinds of websites.

Instead I started out with a simple onion salad dressing recipe and modified it to taste more like the restaurant one. Turned out pretty well. Let me know if you like it.

1 cup olive oil
1 cup sugar
1 small onion
1 tsp salt
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 C white vinegar
1 small carrot, grated
1 tsp celery seed

Throw the onion in a blender and pulse until it is finely chopped. Add the oil, salt, sugar and mustard powder and blend until mixed and pretty smooth. Add the vinegar and blend some more. Add the very finely grated carrot and the celery seeds and give it a few more pulses in the blender to combine.

This is great on sandwiches or salads.

Copycat Don Pablo Salsa Recipe

I love, love, love fresh homemade salsa and after visiting Don Pablo's for lunch one day, I had to recreate their salsa. I like this with just plain tortilla chips. Makes a nice appetizer and I love it as a snack. The salsa keeps in the fridge for a few days, but is best fresh.

  • 2 1/2 cups canned diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup red onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 jalapeno peppers (remove the stems and for less heat remove the seeds and spine)
  • 2 cups diced tomatoes (preferably fresh - otherwise canned will work)

Put everything but the 2 cups of diced fresh tomatoes into a blender and blend just until well combined. You want everything well blended but it doesn't have to be super smooth.

Add the diced tomatoes and pulse just until combined.

Olive Garden Bread Sticks - Super Simple Recipe

I tried this very easy bread stick recipe yesterday. We had plain spaghetti last night and these went with it beautifully. They were a little different than those at olive garden, but still very tasty. I think the next time I'm leaving the oregano out.

Olive Garden Breadsticks
  • 1 Loaf frozen bread dough
  • Nonstick Cooking Spray
  • Garlic powder
  • Dry oregano leaf
Let the bread dough thaw in a large bowl. When dough is soft enough to knead, work it with your fingers until it is pretty pliable. Form it into about 10 small breadsticks. Put them on a greased cookie sheet (non-stick cooking spray works well for this), then cover them with a clean kitchen towel and allow them to rise for about 2 hours.

Preheat your oven to 375. Spray the bread sticks with a little cooking spray, then sprinkle the garlic powder and oregano on them. Bake them for about 25 minutes or until they are golden brown. Serve warm.

Mine looked almost as pretty as the ones in this picture. I wish I snapped a few shots of them, but my family gobbled them up before I had a chance to even think about taking pictures.

Copycat Olive Garden Fettucine Alfredo Recipe

As promised, I'm trying out a few olive garden recipes. Today for lunch I made this fettuccine Alfredo recipe. It turned out really well and very close to the original that's served at the restaurant. I served it with a side salad and some garlic toast. Bread sticks would have been better, but I didn't have time to test out that recipe yet. look for it on the blog later this week.

Olive Garden Fettucine Alfredo Recipe
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese
  • 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 8 ounces Fettuccine

Cut your cream cheese into small chunks and add it to a large pan. Add the Parmesan cheese, the butter and the milk. Slowly heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring quite a bit as you go along. If you don't stir this sauce enough, it will start to stick and then burn on the bottom of your pot, ruining the sauce. Once everything is melted and smooth, the sauce is done.

While you are preparing the sauce cook and drain the fettuccine. Toss them in the sauce and serve immediately.

I used 2% milk for the recipe since that's what I had in my fridge. I'm sure it would have turned out better with whole milk or even half-and-half.

Oive Garden Recipes

One of the restaurants I'm going to miss while we are staying overseas is Olive Garden. I like it for a quick lunch or dinner. The food is always good and pretty consistent across the various Olive Garden restaurants I've been to.

I'm sure I'm going to find some great (and even more authentic) Italian restaurants in Europe but that doesn't mean I'm going to give up on some of my favorite olive garden recipes. This week I'm going to trying to recreate a few of them in my own kitchen and will share the results with you.

Here are the recipes I'm going to try this week.

I'll post about each, including the recipe and how I thought it turned out. Of course you are welcome to comment and let me know if you've tried the recipe and what you thought of it. If you have a particular olive garden recipe you'd like me to research, I'll be glad to do that as well.

I love to eat at restaurant and have quite a few favorite dishes. I also tend to travel a lot and am about to live in Europe for a few months, which unfortunately means I won't be able to visit some of my favorite American restaurants. There are some famous restaurant recipes that I just can't live without so I'm embarking on a journey to recreate some of my favorites.

On this blog I'll share some of the recipes I'm finding that are working for me.
